Ducking in for a quiet retreat

Fresh air, fresh eggs from the coop and home baked bread-all that's just part of a short stay at Telegraph Retreat, about a 15 minute drive north of Port Macquarie.

Nestled on about four hectares at the end of a lonely country road, the pretty property is five-star rated, offering the ultimate in relaxation.

Hosts Robyn and Ian Whitehead offer as much privacy and space as you want. Little touches such as the home-made soaps, Anzac biscuits, freshly cut flowers, slippers and the softest bathrobes ensure the stay is that much more enjoyable.

The home sleeps eight people comfortably, catering for either couples wanting to swap busy city schedules for a more relaxing and romantic getaway or the ideal family holiday offering an insight into country life.

The Whitehead's two children can keep younger guests entertained while parents sit on the sweeping verandahs with a book or just soak up the serenity of the area.

A dip in the heated swimming pool and listening to the cascading waterfall is just the thing on a balmy summer night.

Hand-feeding the ducks on the nearby pond, collecting freshly-laid eggs and watching the family's peacock Dudley put on its colourful show is a lot of fun for big and small kids alike.

The cottage has a fully equipped kitchen with a well stocked pantry allowing guests to cook up a storm or sit back and have it cooked for you.

We chose to put our feet up and have a three-course silver service meal prepared for us by Robyn in the formal dining area of their home next door."
